It is the ninth month of the Muslim year and it is time for Ramadan. During Ramadan young people and adults fast from sunrise to sunset. They only eat something just before the sun rises during a small meal which is called sahur, and during a larger meal after sunset which is called iftar. During Ramadan Muslims also read the Qur?an, the Muslim holy book which God dictated to the prophet Muhammad. Ramadan is a time to pray and to meditate. It is also a time to give to others who are in need. Many Muslims share food and money with the less fortunate during this time of year.

At the end of Ramadan there is a celebration called Eid-al-Fitr. For three days people put on new clothes and visit family and friends to celebrate. Small gifts are exchanged and carnivals and festivals are held. People go to mosque to pray and to give thanks.

This "Holidays Around the World" title explains in an easy to follow manner what takes place during Ramadan and the Eid. An entertaining text and lots of colorful and carefully annotated photographs are followed by a section entitled "More about Ramadan." The section provides readers with lots of additional information about Islam and it includes a traditional Ramadan recipe.
