Volcanoes and earthquakes are forces of nature which leave us feeling very much in their power as there is very little that we can do to avoid them. Of course there are certain places that are more likely to experience these phenomena. For example in the countries that can be found in "the ring of fire," a region of hotspots for earthquakes and volcanoes. There are mountains that have a history of erupting and then there are the ones that suddenly blow their tops without any warning. In this book we discover all kinds of things about volcanoes and earthquakes including what they are like, how they are studied, how scientists try to predict and prepare for them, the death and destruction they cause and much more.

One of the Eyewitness books, this volume is filled with annotated illustrations and photographs which help the reader understand the topics and also see, almost in person, the artefacts, tools, samples and archaeological findings that are related to the erupting volcano and the shaking earthquake. This is an excellent reference book which is interesting, informative, and superbly presented.
