Max knows just what he wants for Christmas because he has just seen Wilma Warthog ride by on one: a red Sand-Spitter motorcycle with Bigfoot tires. Unfortunately for Max, writing is not one of his strong suits, and when the postman sees his letter to Santa he does not know what to do with the letter except to send it to Max and Ruby’s grandma. Grandma has a hard time deciphering what Max is trying to say and it takes several exchanges of letters between Grandma and Max before Grandma finally understands what it is the Max wants. Of course Ruby keeps telling Max that it is hopeless writing to Santa in early July because the man in red is on holiday at such a time.

As it happens, for a change, Ruby is wrong; and the wonderful gentleman who lives at the North Pole is home. Best of all, he turns out to be a just the kind of man we all imagine him to be.

The book is full of wonderful letters to lift open and to look at, and Rosemary Wells’ instantly recognizable illustrations make this Max and Ruby adventure a delight to read.
