Schuyler Van Alen has never really fitted in with the other well heeled students at Duchesne, the exclusive private school that she goes to. Though her family is one of the most prestigious in New York City, money is scarce and the large perfectly situated family mansion is running to seed somewhat. With her mother in a coma and her father no longer in the picture, Schuyler has been raised by her unyielding and very high brow grandmother. Her life is quiet and she has only a few friends, but Schuyler likes it this way.

Then Schuyler turns fifteen and things start to change. Her body starts to transform in ways that are not normal, and she begins to crave raw meat. When one of Schuyler's schoolmates is murdered, drained of all her blood, things really begin to happen very fast. It is a frightening business that is made even more frightening when Schuyler goes to a meeting of The Committee. Schuyler, along with many other young people, is told is that they are Blue Bloods, an ancient race of vampires. Within her Schuyler carries the memories and experiences of many vampires who came before her, and she is intimately connected with the other Blue Bloods around her.

With the help of her friends, Schuyler starts to ask questions about the dead girl. It turns out that she too was a Blue Blood and was, therefore, supposed to immortal. How is it then that she died? What is out there that can kill a vampire?

Combining romance, vampire lore, and mystery, Melissa De La Cruz tells a gripping story set in New York City. Excepts from the diary of a woman who traveled on the Mayflower gives readers clues as to what might be coming, but it is only in the last chapters of the story that readers truly come to appreciate what it means to be a Blue Blood.

This first book in Melissa de la Cruz's Blue Blood series will have readers eager to read more about these young vampires who have to find a place for themselves in a very hostile and complicated world.
