Emily now knows, without a trace of doubt, that she and Vigo are the last members of the Guardian Council. They and their allies are the only ones who will stand against the might of the Elf King. They also know that Max, who went to the Guardian Academy with Vigo, has allied himself with the Elf King, stolen the Mother Stone, and has taken it to his master. For some reason Max has chosen to betray everything he was raised to believe in and he is a dangerous enemy.

Emily, her family, her friends, and what remains of the soldiers of the Cielis Guard get ready for battle. The robots get the last three remaining colossus working and Navin is both thrilled and terrified when he finds out that he is going to be piloting one of the monster machines.

Meanwhile Max has freed a terrible Mountain Giant from its icy prison and soon the creature is attacking Emily’s small force.

Prince Trellis, the son of the Elf King, is a member of Emily’s group, but he is not able to give his attention to the job in hand because he is dwelling on the mistakes that he and his kind made in the past. He now knows that he can use his stone to go back in time, but when he does this he meets an elf who persuades him to leave the past where it belongs and to instead work to protect the future.

As Emily begins to piece together Max’s story, Vigo’s story, and the story of her grandfather, she begins to understand that the Voice that she hears coming from her stone is not something she should trust. Whatever or whoever is behind that voice does not care about Emily and her cause. It has an agenda of its own and Emily would be wise to be very careful.

In this fifth Amulet title Kazu Kibuishi gives his fans another enthralling and fascinating story full of memorable characters and complimented by rich artwork.
