Counting books have come a long way in the last decade or so because authors and illustrators have worked hard to find creative ways to make counting books unique and interesting. Though this accounting book was first published in 1956, the author, who was clearly ahead of her time, understood that it is important to make counting books engaging and interesting.

Throughout the book readers are presented with wonderful images, which are paired with simple pieces of text. Together they capture the beauty in nature, and the simple joys that fill children’s days. For the number two we see two little girls making a wish as they pull on a wish bone. A few pages later we see four sheep “nibbling rye” as a little boy sitting in a tree looks on. Later still we see nine cherries sitting on a white plate, and a little chipmunk is eating one of them. On the page for the number twelve we see twelve baby birds who are being taught how to sing. Their instructors are a little mouse and an adult bird.

Little children and their grownups are going to love the beautiful world that Tasha Tudor has created in this lovely award-winning book.
